Inspired by the previous post on juicing, I thought I'd post a couple of smoothie recipes. I have a breakfast smoothie pretty much every day; generally the ingredients vary based on what we have in the house, but I thought it might be helpful to post a "base" recipe here.
My basic go-to smoothie recipe
1 banana
1/2 cup berries (whatever kind you fancy; I use frozen because they're cheaper, but fresh are good, too)
1 tbsp flax seed oil or ground linseeds (if I remember, I put whole linseeds into the blender first and grind them separately)
1 tbsp chia seeds (for more EFAs)
1/2 tsp dairy-free lactobacillus powder
1 tbsp almonds
1 tbsp pumpkin seeds
Water to cover (or to taste)
Blend and drink! I add the extra stuff like nuts and seeds in there to keep me going for longer - otherwise with a plain fruit smoothie, I can easily be hungry again an hour later.
Watermelon and strawberry smoothie
I had some watermelon and papaya that needed eating, so I just tried this out this morning, and it was delicious.
4 cups watermelon
6 or so strawberries, hulled
1/4 cup papaya
1 tbsp flax seed oil
1 tbsp chia seeds
1/2 tsp dairy-free lactobacillus powder
...and blend. I did add a little water (maybe a third of a cup?) but the smoothie came out very watery, so I really don't think I needed to.
